Online html-Page Outline Maker

(Change all the text content to what you want, but keep at least the large heading,
with its id intact. READ the "NOTE: Special Instructions" (halfway down this page), before beginning.)

The Document Object Model (DOM) allows for quick, dynamic access to all elements in an XHTML document for manipulation with JavaScript. (REMOVE THIS SAMPLE ITEM -- use Remove Current button.)

The buttons below do what you might want to do. (Finally, REMOVE THIS SAMPLE ITEM *THEN* select the dotted line, below, and use Insert_Before button to add your first outline item.)

Click on any other item after replacing the content of an item -- to get the number/letter to automatically prepended.
Always use Replace Current to replace the content of any item that has no child items under it.
Sometimes, the item may need to be selected more than once & this button pushed more than once ->
NOTE: Replace Current or Remove Current *CLEARS OUT* all child nodes.
TO EDIT JUST THE TOP ITEM OF WHAT IS SELECTED, USE
THE FOLLOWING TEXTBOX AND BUTTON: (Currently Firefox Only):

Start by removing existing I., II., and III. Then click on the dashed line and use Insert Before to add the first
item to your outline.

** NEW OPTION (to share outline editing) **: NOTE: Still follow the special instructions as before (above). ALSO: The html content pasted here must have been produced using this tool for an editable outline to appear at the top.

(To see good html, use Firefox.) Paste all the textarea code into NotePad/SimpleText and Save it as [yourpagename].html,
with the file type textbox in the Save As Dialog set to 'All Files" (so no unwanted .txt extension gets tacked on). You then
have a web page which IS the very outline you just created using this JavaScript program. Easy as that.
